Midnight in Canterlot by Noben Midnight in Canterlot by Noben
Hey look, MLP fanart. So I tried a whole new style for this one. Is okay?

I've always thought of Lunas mane and tail to really be just filters for the world around her, eliminating all physical obstruction to see the night sky no matter where she is. Through the clouds, through the ground, she always has a clear image of the stars.

(This is why I have Orion right there in her hair.)

Full view or download for a wallpaper size.

Also, Sunrise in Equestria.

The first thing my eye notices is the bright colors in the upper left corner. At first glance... The light is too bright on the top edges of those moon-crossing clouds. It feels more like dusk than deepest night. But… As the eye shies away from the brightness of the moon it follows the stripe of night sky un-obstructed by the clouds above or the haze of light pollution from below. That pure night sky leads me straight to the darkest spot on the page – Luna’s mane. It sucks my attention in like looking down the blackness of a well. Skipping over the wing, the starscape of her tail then whips my attention around the bottom right corner and follows the darkness at to the lower right corner and up to the rail… …which leads me right back to Luna.

The colors of this composition make my eye spiral around the image always leading me back to Luna. I must say that this is a masterful manipulation of my eye. The best I’ve seen since those early 1980’s Marlborough ads which always kept your attention spiraling AWAY from the surgeon general’s warning.

The third or fourth time my eye spirals around the page I realize that the starry blackness of her tail and mane is a comforting refuge for an eye seared by those too-bright clouds or repelled by the rosy haze of light pollution coming off the city.

Well done indeed!

PS: …then I read your wonderful idea about Luna's mane and tail and realized why you kept dragging my attention back to those windows into outer space…

Well done indeed!

This piece has pretty clear vision, though a simple one. It depicts Luna watching Canterlot on her balcony and it does it quite simply.
In terms of originality, obviously Luna is Hasbro property, but the way you portrayed her is quite different from other fanart I've seen.
The technique is excellent, I'll start with the moon and the night. Dimming both with the clouds makes them even more alluring and then bang- You contrast it with the clear starry sky of Luna's mane. The detail of Luna's mane made me feel as if I was being sucked through the clouds into the real night sky. Additionally, the perspective, colour and shadowing is excellent. I really really like the night city bathed in the moonlight. Luna's proportions and the position of her wings are placed excellently.
What mainly blows my mind is the technique used in the artwork. Especially with the night sky.

One massive qualm, that doesn't affect the artwork itself, but it's function. As a wallpaper, this piece is flawed. Most people post their desktop icons on the left hand side. The problem is that if this piece is used as a wallpaper, the icons risk blocking out the beautiful moon on the left. If you flip the piece, it'll risk blocking out Luna. This means person who uses this as wallpaper will be faced with the choice of flipping it right or flipping it left. Still, the quality of the piece will probably make people overlook the small impracticality and just force some people to clean up their desktops. Hell I'm downloading it and my desktop is messy.

To conclude this an excellent piece of digital artwork that displays very good technique and a more original take on Luna. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Such beautiful sight! It makes me wonder if the Night is about to bring terror or tranquility to the land.

That's not cool, man.  Please remove it.  I don't want to be mean about it, but yeah please ask before you make edits to another artists work.
